History
The US Open, originally known as the U.S. National Championship, was first held in August 1881 at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island with only members of the United States National Lawn Tennis association permitted to enter. For the first six years of the tournament it was a men’s only competition but this changed in 1887 with the introduction of the U.S. Women’s National Singles Championship.
In 1968, the tournament became known as the U.S Open and professional tennis players were permitted to compete for the first time and that year 96 men and 63 women entered the competition. The tournament relocated to its current home in the USTA National Tennis Center in 1978 and it has stayed there ever since. The center features 22 outdoor courts, with four ‘show courts’, 13 field courts and 5 practice courts and the main court has an impressive capacity of 23,771.
