Professional boxing, also known as prizefighting, is regulated and sanctioned boxing that is fought for a purse which is divided between the two competing boxers. The majority of professional boxing matches are supervised by a regulatory authority in order to ensure the fighters’ safety. High-profile boxing bouts are also usually endorsed by a sanctioning body which awards championship belts, establishes rules and assigns judges and referees. Boxing is a hugely popular sport worldwide, with millions of people tuning in to watch it and tens of thousands attending the fights. With Zenseats you can find top tier tickets and hospitality packages for the most exciting boxing bouts taking place worldwide. The National Sporting Club (NSC), a private club in London, first introduced professional glove fights according to its own set of rules, to its premises in 1891. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) was then formed in 1919 with close ties to the NSC.
The NSC began to award belts, which were presented by the fifth Earl of Lonsdale, to British title fight winners in 1909. This tradition was continued by the BBBofC after the NSC closed, with them awarding Lonsdale Belts to any British boxer who won three title fights in the same weight division.
Title fights have always been the pinnacle of professional boxing and promoters who have been able to stage profitable title fights have become influential in the sport and instrumental in bringing boxing to new audiences. Professional boxing has been a hugely popular sport since its inception and this has continued into the modern day with title fights regularly pulling in almost 100,000 spectators and millions more watching on television.
There are four major sanctioning bodies that organise worldwide boxing tournaments, these are:
World Boxing Association (WBA) - An international boxing organisation that awards the WBA world championship title.
World Boxing Council (WBC) - Regarded as one of the most prestigious boxing organisations, the WBC sits across over 140 countries that have their flags represented on the title belt.
World Boxing Organization (WBO) - Another boxing organisation that recognises professional boxing world champions.
International Boxing Federation (IBF) - The IBF has created regional titles across the United States and other countries in order to give young boxers the opportunity to participate.
