🎤Chart & Pop

Pop music, the genre of great rhythm, infectious melodies and sing-a-long lyrics: a winning combo that explains why pop has become so dominant around the world and in the charts that it is even known as ‘chart music’.

The name ‘pop music’ was originally used to describe whatever the popular music of the time was, and when the term first crept onto the scene in the 1950s it was synonymous with Rock ‘n Roll. However, since then it has developed into its own ever-evolving genre, one that has taken inspiration from all the great music styles throughout history and blended them together to produce a cool and catchy category all of its own.

The swinging 60s is when pop music really started to take the world by storm, with the introduction of the portable radio, bands like the Beach Boys in the US, and the global mania that was The Beatles. This coming together of American and British influences was what started to carve pop music out as a standalone genre with its own sound.

In the 70s, we saw the likes of Elton John, Queen and the Jackson 5 break into the pop music scene, with songs from these artists still considered as some of the greatest pop songs of all time. The 80s was a huge defining moment for the genre, as MTV made its debut and digital recording offered endless possibilities for new electronic sounds to be incorporated into songs. This era gave birth to some revolutionary pop artists, such as Michael Jackson, whose Thriller album is still the best selling of all time, Madonna and Prince. We can truly thank the 80s for producing the pop culture that has carried through and still remains today.

The 90s brought girl power to our airwaves, welcoming artists including The Spice Girls and Britney Spears. By the time the new millennium came around, pop music was well and truly the music of the masses with iconic millennial pop stars like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Drake, Rihanna and Beyoncé, some of who are still making chart-topping music today.

Pop music in the 2020s is an eclectic mix of R&B, electronic, disco, country, hip-hop and many other influences. One of the best features of pop is its constant evolution as trends change, technology advances and sounds from previous decades inspire modern pop stars.
