?The Grand National

The Grand National is a jump horse race held annually in April at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. The race is 4 miles and 514 yards long and requires the horses to jump 30 fences over the course of 2 laps. Some of the fences used in the Grand National have become famous in their own right due to being much larger than conventional fences on horse racing tracks. The combination of these larger fences and the distance of the Grand National has led to it being described as “the ultimate test of horse and rider”. The Grand National is the most valuable jump race in Europe, with a prize fund of £1 million. Attending this iconic British horse race is an unforgettable day out and one that should be experienced in style. History

The Grand National was founded in 1829, with the first race taking part in 1836 which was won by a horse named The Duke. However it was during 1838 and 1839 that the Grand National transformed from a small local affair to a national event thanks to a number of factors, firstly the discontinuation of the Great St. Albans chase, which had previously clashed with the race at Aintree. Secondly, the railway that had opened from Manchester to Liverpool in 1830, was then linked to a line from London and Birmingham in 1839, making it possible for people to attend from large parts of the country. Finally, a newly formed committee was appointed to organise the event and they brought significant press, attendance and higher quality horses and riders.

The Grand National is run over the National Course at Aintree which includes 16 fences, the first 14 of which are jumped twice. It is the longest National Hunt race in Britain with horses that complete the race covering a distance of 4 miles 514 yards.
