The Rugby World Cup is one of the most popular major sporting events in the world and the 2023 tournament is set to be particularly exciting due to it being the event’s tenth edition. Not only will it be the tenth edition but it will also take place on the 200th anniversary of the ‘invention’ of the sport by William Webb Ellis. The 2023 World Cup will be held in France with matches played at nine venues across the country during September and October, Zenseats is able to offer top tier seats and hospitality packages at every location. History

The first Rugby World Cup was held in Australia and New Zealand in 1987 with 16 nations competing for the Webb Ellis cup. New Zealand became the first team to win the Rugby World Cup after a 29-9 victory over France in the final and the nation has gone on to win the tournament on two more occasions since their inaugural victory. South Africa and Australia have also won the Rugby World Cup multiple times, with England being the only team in the southern hemisphere to win the cup.

The format of the World Cup sees 20 teams split into four pools of five, after 40 pool matches the top two teams then progress to the quarter finals. The winners of each pool play a runner up from another pool in the quarter finals and the winners at this stage then go on to the semi-finals before the two semi-final winners contest the final.

After coming from humble beginnings, the Rugby World Cup has grown to become the third biggest sporting event in the world behind the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games. When the tournament began in 1987, attendance at the matches stood at around 5000, at the 2023 competition the Stade de France venue used for the opening match and final will likely fill its 80,698 seats.
