Anthony Joshua is a British professional boxer and former two-time world heavyweight champion. Joshua has held the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles both between 2016 and June 2019 and again between December 2019 and September 2021.
In 2014, just a year into his professional fighting career, Anthony Joshua was named Prospect of the Year by The Ring magazine. As of 2021, Joshua is ranked by The Ring, BoxRec and Transnational Boxing Rankings Board as the world’s third best active heavyweight, he is ranked fourth by ESPN and seventh best active pound for pound boxer by BoxRec. Joshua’s knock-out to win percentage is particularly impressive and stands at 91.67%, with an overall knockout percentage of world heavyweight title fights of 63.64%.
During Anthony Joshua’s second reign as unified heavyweight champion he faced three opponents, the first of which was a rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr that took place in December 2019 in Saudi Arabia. At the weigh-in Joshua came in at nearly ten pounds lighter than in their first match and Ruiz came in at 16 pounds heavier. Joshua was disciplined throughout the match, ensuring he kept Ruiz at a comfortable distance and he eventually won by unanimous decision to reclaim the unified heavyweight titles.
In 2020, Joshua defended his heavyweight title against Kubrat Pulev in a fight that was on the cards since 2017. The fight took place in December at Wembley Arena and saw Joshua drop his opponent twice in the third round and ultimately defeat Pulev by knockout in the ninth round to retain his heavyweight titles.
As soon as Joshua defeated Pulev, the question everyone wanted answered was when he would be facing undefeated WBC and The Ring Champion, Tyson Fury. A two fight deal was agreed between Tyson and Fury in June 2020 and Fury announced the following year that the first fight would be taking place in August 2021 in Saudi Arabia. However, due to Deontay Wilder refusing to step aside to let Fury and Joshua fight prior to a third fight between him and Fury, Joshua instead had to face Oleksandr Usyk on 25th September 2021. On the night Usyk outboxed Joshua over 12 rounds and claimed a unanimous decision victory, meaning Joshua lost his titles for the second time in his career.
A rematch is on the cards between Joshua and Usyk and a fight announcement has been teased from Joshua, so fans are eagerly awaiting the news of his next opponent. Although Joshua will be facing Usyk again, due to the situation in Ukraine this could be delayed and there are also six other potential opponents Anthony Joshua could face in the meantime so watch this space!
