About Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band that formed in 2002 in Sheffield. Band members include Alex Turner who is the lead singer, guitarist and plays the keyboards, Jamie Cook on the guitar, Nick O’Malley who plays bass guitar and sings backing vocals and Matt Helders who is on the drums and also provides backing vocals.

The Arctic Monkeys’ debut album, Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not, released in 2006, became the fastest selling album in UK chart history and also won Best British Album in 2007 at the BRIT Awards. The band’s success continued with its second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, which came out in 2007 and again won Best British Album at the 2008 BRIT Awards.

The band received critical acclaim once again in 2013 with the release of their fifth album, AM, and global hit, Do I Wanna Know. The album topped four Billboard Charts and got a platinum certification in the US, it also earned them their third Best British Album of the Year award at the 2014 BRITs.

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, the sixth album from the Arctic Monkeys, distinguished itself from the band’s previous work with its piano-oriented songs, as opposed to their usual guitar heavy style. The album received a Best Alternative Music Album nomination at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

The Article Monkeys have seen huge success throughout their career, having sold over 20 million records worldwide and being the first independent label band to debut at number one in the UK with their first six albums.

Arctic Monkeys Facts

  • The band have remained incredibly modest despite their meteoric rise to stardom. Alex Turner treated himself to a Vauxhall Corsa after he signed a record deal and Jamie Cook always insists on paying his fair share of the meal when being wined and dined by music executives.
  • Former bassist, Andy Nicholson, left the Arctic Monkeys after the success of the first album became too much for him. Instead he went on to fulfil a lifelong dream of owning his own pub.
  • The band have long standing beef with Radiohead after the lead singer of the band, Thom Yorke, slated the Arctic Monkeys as they were gaining popularity.
