Europa Conference League

Alongside the prestigious Champions League and Europa League, we now have a third European competition: the Europa Conference League.
The aim of the Conference League was to reduce the size of the Europa League, while giveng clubs from lower-ranked UEFA countries more opportunities to participate in European competition.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin highlighted, “The new competition makes UEFA’s club competitions more inclusive than ever before. There will be more matches for more clubs, with more associations represented in the group stages.”
After being briefly dubbed ‘Europa League 2’, and while the competition format for qualification and group stage was being decided, UEFA decided on Europa Conference League as the official name. This is often abbreviated as UECL by the press and media outlets.
Now a popular addition to the family of European club competitions, Zenseats is delighted to provide the best secondary marketplace ticket options, covering matches throughout all stages of the competition. This includes the exciting action of the group stages, the thrills of the knockout phase, plus the decisive final itself.

Brief History of the UECL

The very first UECL competition was held in the 2021-22 season. Etching their name into the history books and lifting the new trophy for the first time was Roma, managed by legendary manager Jose Mourinho. The Italian side beat Dutch outfit Feyenoord 1-0 in the final.

West Ham United won the second edition of the Europa Conference League. Despite having difficulties in their own league, the London side managed by David Moyes, defeated Fiorentina 2-1 in the final at the Fortuna Arena in Prague to clinch their first European silverware in 58 years.

Europa Conference League Format

Unlike the Champions League and the Europa League, there are three initial qualifying rounds for the Europa Champions League. The first of which features teams from the lower-ranked UEFA nations. Under the current format, no team secures direct entry to the group stage of the Conference League from their domestic league competition.

The second qualifying round introduces teams eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers. Subsequently, the third qualifying round and play-off round welcome teams knocked out from the Europa League qualifiers. This format ultimately decides which 32 teams will reach and compete in the group stage of the Conference League.

Following the group stage, the Conference League features a preliminary knockout round of 16 teams, with eight runners-up from the group stage, plus eight third-placed teams from the Europa League group stage. The victors progress to join the eight Conference League group stage winners in the Round of 16. The knockout phase then continues with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final.

Proposed Conference League Changes

Following lengthy consultations with clubs and stakeholders over the last couple of years, the UEFA Executive Committee announced changes to the format of all three club competitions.

The biggest change will be for the Champions League group phase, which will become a single league competition from the 2024-25 season onwards, featuring 36 teams in total. The top eight sides will qualify directly for the Round of 16, while the next 16 sides will feature in a two-legged play-off round to decide the additional eight qualifiers.

UEFA will use a similar format in the other two competitions. The Europa League will retain its existing name, although the Europa Conference League will simply be known as the Conference League.

From the 2024 season, the Conference League will expand to 36 teams, from the current 32. Instead of the traditional group stages containing four teams each, there will be one league phase for all competing teams. Each team in the Conference League will play six matches against six different opponents over a 10 week period. This expansion enriches the matchday calendar, offering fans a wealth of continental games to experience.

The top eight sides in the league will automatically qualify for the knockout stages. The teams finishing in positions 9 to 24 will head into a two-leg play-off to see who progresses to the last 16 of the Conference League.
