The hidden easter eggs in ‘Flowers’ by Miley Cyrus

Posted 14 Jan 2023

Artists who create meaningful music are heartthrobs of the 21st century, and Miley Cyrus is one of the best musicians this century has gifted us with. Her new single, Flowers, is a meaningful song with hidden references and hints from her past relationship with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. The fact that this hit was released on his birthday points out a possible connection.

This article will take you through some hidden references you may have missed.

A birthday message in disguise

Like a perfect bow binding the birthday gift to be opened and finding the message inside, Miley released Flowers right when the clock hit midnight on Liam’s birthday. Is this a birthday present in disguise? Considering the other messages sprinkled all over the music video, we sure think so! It’s too much of a coincidence. Especially when she said, ‘A Flower for you on your 33rd Birthday’.

‘Built a home and watched it burn.’

The opening lyrics of Flowers mention a house that the then couple watched burn down into ashes.

We were good; we were gold.

Kinda dream that can't be sold.

We were right 'til we weren't.

Built a home and watched it burn.

Of course, a burning home can be the metaphoric home of their married life that burned down or the house that burned down in the Woosley wildfire in 2018. When this house burned down, the then couple was at the peak of their relationship. Miley refers to this in the song as “We were good, we were gold”.

We believe this is a message for her ex about their past relationship. In a previous interview, Miley revealed that the fire incident convinced her that Liam was the man for her. A reference we feel to the ‘Gold’ life.

An answer to ‘the dedicated song’

Liam, in the past, dedicated Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” to Miley, and the couple shared a dance stage on this song. Considering the importance of this song in their relationship, Miley answering to the lyrics of this song can be inferred as an answer to her ex.

Here’s how the lyrics to the two songs compare:

Bruno: That I should have bought you flowers

Miley: I can buy myself flowers

Bruno: And held your hand

Miley: And I can hold my own hand

Bruno: Should have gave you all my hours

Miley: Talk to myself for hours

Bruno: Take you to every party 'cause all you wanted to do was dance

Miley: I can take myself dancing. Yeah, I can love me better than you can.

These lyrics are now too obvious to ignore while listening to the songs, especially when we know the backstory.

Easter eggs in Miley Cyrus's 'Flowers' music video | Mashable

The black suit jacket

Miley didn’t hold back on *that* red carpet moment from Avengers: End Game premiere when Liam publicly asked her to “behave for once”. Well, the not-so-hidden easter egg referring to the event is a similar black suit jacket to what Liam was wearing that day. Rumours are swirling that it might be the original jacket that he was wearing.

Her carefree and free-style dance wearing that jacket exclaims that she does not have to behave because the song is about self-love!

Fans are also speculating that as well as the black suit, another hidden easter egg is the gold dress she is seen wearing in the opening scenes of the music video. This dress is similar to what Jennifer Lawrence wore alongside Liam at the movie premiere in LA in 2012. In the past, Jennifer admitted to sharing a kiss with Liam off-screen.

Taking self-love to another level

In the ode to self-love in Flowers, Miley has a powerful stance on self-love and empowerment. This is evident from her lyrics:

I can love me better, baby.

And also,

Paint my nails cherry-red

Match the roses that you left

No remorse, no regret

I forgive every word you said

Miley knows how to love herself and radiates empowering aura throughout her new music video. Her latest music video is laden with references and hints and many easter eggs yet to be cracked. This new single is a gift to her fans just months before the release of her new album. As if we didn’t already love Miley, this song gives fans another excellent reason to keep listening to her music.

Thank you for reading the easter eggs. We came across the music video.
