The best football leagues to watch around the world

Posted 11 Apr 2023

From streets to stadiums, men to women, and boys to girls, the beautiful game is played in every part of the world. In Europe and other regions, many leagues run nationally and are ranked by UEFA, mainly depending on the competition and players. We look at some top football leagues to watch worldwide.

English Premier League (EPL):

English Premier League is easily the best league in the world, and it's not without any reason. Unlike the below-mentioned leagues, there aren't two or three powerhouses but five-six, making this league the most competitive.

That said, Premier League is known as a home to some of the biggest clubs in world football with its fast-paced and physical style of play. There is even a term used as 'Top 6' while talking about only Premier League, usually mentioning Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham. However, only four of the above-mentioned sides currently lie in the top six positions, with Arteta's side bossing the chart.

Rivalries are another attribute that makes the Premier League more prominent than most other leagues as it provides high-voltage fixtures like Manchester City vs Manchester United, Liverpool vs Manchester United, Arsenal vs Tottenham, Manchester City vs Liverpool, and others.

If we look back, Premier League dates back to the late 19th century (1992) and has seen periods of dominance by several clubs over the years. Worldwide streaming, high salaries and the best managers make this league the best.

La Liga (Spanish League):

La Liga is always in a race with Premier League for the competition to become the best league in the world. It won't be an overstatement to say that in some aspects, such as quality style of play, having a rich history of some of the greatest players in the history of the game, and having the best managers in the world, La Liga is genuinely the most exciting league in the world of football.

La Liga features Elite football clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and others.

Known for its technical and tactical style of play, La Liga is home to the best players in the world throughout its rich, long history, which goes back to the early 20th century.

La Liga is also famous due to the fierce rivalries it possesses. The rivalry between two powerhouses of Spanish football, Barcelona, and Real Madrid, is known as 'ElClassico' and is the most watched game on planet earth as every football fan watches this highly anticipated game, with the action and thrill it possesses.

As mentioned above, La Liga is home to the best players in the world; two of the greatest players of this generation, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo, have played most of their careers here for Spanish clubs Barcelona, and Real Madrid, respectively.

Bundesliga (German League):

Bundesligais well known for its fast-paced and attacking style of play and passionate and dedicated fanbase.

After above mentioned three leagues, Bundesliga is the league with the most successful and iconic clubs in football history, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Borussia Monchengladbach, and others.

Having been formed in 1963, Bundesliga has a comparatively short history. However, it became a competitive league and gained popularity in just a few years.

Bundesliga is known for its high-scoring games and for producing exciting young talent. Unlike top leagues like Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1, Bundesliga has 18 teams in the competition, meaning each team plays 24 matches from August to May.

Major League Soccer (MLS):

Major League Soccerhas made improvement and is a strong contender to become the sixth or seventh-best league in the world in the coming years.

MLS has improved its competition, quality of the game, and viewership with the addition of new teams and world-class players. Before, Major League Soccer was a final stop for top European players, who used to come after achieving great successes in Elite clubs.

Those players include the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Villa, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, Wayne Rooney, Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Beckham, Gonzalo Higuain, and others.

However, with a lot of improvement in several areas, several players from top European clubs have gone to MLS in recent years, like Riqui Puig, Thiago Almada, Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Bernardeschi, Giorgio Chiellini, Roman Bürki, XhedranShaqiri, Douglas Costa, etc.

With the addition of players of this calibre, the league's popularity is growing daily in the United States and worldwide. The proof is the evident development in recent years.
