For a relatively small city, Liverpool is packed with things to do, see and discover, especially when it comes to art, music and culture, with an amazing selection of galleries and museums to choose from. There is plenty of history to be found on the streets and in the docks of Liverpool, as the northern city is famous for a number of momentous events, most notably producing the Beatles and the launch of the Titanic on its maiden voyage from Liverpool docks. In fact, Liverpool has built such a strong reputation for being a culturally significant City that it was honoured with the title of “European Capital of Culture” in 2008 and was even considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for a number of years.
As the birthplace of the Beatles, you can imagine that Liverpool has a booming music scene and you would not be wrong. The city is filled with live music venues that cater to every genre and size of concert, from tucked away and intimate nightclubs to vast spaces such as Echo Arena that host popular international acts. The Liverpool Philharmonic is also a must to visit, as it is one of the best concert halls in Europe and home to a professional orchestra.
One of the first things that comes to mind when you think of Liverpool is it’s football scene, as the city is responsible for two of the most successful teams in premier league history, Liverpool and Everton FC. Liverpool is the only city to have staged top division football every season since the Football League was formed in 1888 and Liverpool FC is the British club that has won the most European cup titles. So if you’re a football fanatic, Liverpool is the place for you! Liverpool FC’s ground is at Anfield, and is one of the most visited attractions in the city and you can find Everton at Goodison Park, both grounds are just a short distance from the city centre.
Although definitely the city’s favourite sport, there is more than just football to experience in Liverpool. Liverpool is home to Aintree Race Course, which is where one of the country’s most famous horse racing events takes place every April. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club is also located across the river and has played host to the British Open Championship numerous times.
