As the second largest city in the United Kingdom, Birmingham plays host to a wealth of cultural events and welcomes tourists all year round. You will never be stuck for something to do in Birmingham as the Midlands’ City cultural significance is recognised in art, music, sports, cuisine, literature and more.

Birmingham Sports & Music Events

Birmingham’s musical history goes back centuries, as it hosted the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival from 1784 to 1912, making it the longest running classical music festival to ever exist. However, Birmingham’s musical influence had only just begun and the city has gone on to birth incredible classic talent such as the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Ex Cathedra choir and Orchestra of the Swan. The city does not limit itself to the classics though and can also be credited for producing iconic artists such as Black Sabbath, The Streets and Duran Duran. The impressive musical reputation of Birmingham means that acts from around the world visit the City on their international tours to perform at venues such as the Utilita Arena and the Resorts World Arena. If you’re more interested in catching the up and coming artists of the moment then you could also venture to some of Birmingham’s more intimate venues, such as The Sunflower Lounge or 02 Academy.

Birmingham is also home to the UK’s most popular theatre, the Hippodrome, which attracts over 600,000 visitors a year and boasts an impressive lineup of world-famous shows, including operas, musicals, ballets, dance performances, dramas and more. You can also find Europe’s largest open space, relative to its size, in Birmingham. Expansive parks such as Handsworth and Common Hill play host to festivals during the summer months and throughout the city you can find festivals such as the International Jazz Festival and Supersonic Festival.

Two of the oldest football teams in the world, Aston Villa FC and Birmingham City FC can be found in the Midland’s major city so if you’re a football fan why not go and watch one of these iconic teams play. Cricket is also a popular spectator sport in Birmingham and you can go and watch the bat and ball game at Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
