Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury is a British professional boxer and two-time world heavyweight champion. Following Fury’s defeat of Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, he held the unified WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring titles, and after his defeat of Deontay Wilder in 2020 he again held the WBC and The Ring magazine titles. Fury is the third heavyweight, after Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali to hold The Ring magazine title twice and as of November 2021 he is ranked by ESPN, BoxRec and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board as the world’s best active heavyweight. Fury is also ranked as the third-best active boxer pound for pound by BoxRec, fourth by ESPN and seventh by TBRB and the Boxing Writers Association of America.

Since making his comeback to boxing after taking a hiatus due to issues with his mental health and drug and alcohol abuse, Deontay Wilder has been Tyson Fury’s primary opponent and the fighters have faced each other on three occasions.

The first fight between Fury and Wilder took place in December 2018 in front of a crowd of 17, 698 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The boxers fought a 12-round split decision draw which meant Wilder retained his WBC title, despite many believing that Fury deserved the victory.

Fury and Wilder announced a rematch to take place on 22nd February 2020 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In the build-up to the fight Tyson Fury split with his trainer Ben Davison, who had been fundamental in the boxer’s comeback, and instead partnered with SugarHill Steward. Both fighters weighed in heavier than for their previous match against each other and Wilder was the heaviest of his career. Despite Wilder’s added weight, Fury floored Wilder in the third and fifth round and although Wilder made it back to his feet he was struggling to muster any counterattack and the fight was stopped midway through the seventh round. Fury received widespread praise for his performance, it made him the first male boxer to defeat two champions who had 10 more more defences of their world championship and he reclaimed his unified heavyweight titles.

Deontay Wilder called for a second rematch fight against Tyson Fury which was tentatively scheduled for July 2020 but due to the pandemic was indefinitely postponed. Fury then announced he would be foregoing the fight due to Wilder’s team failing to deliver a date and he would instead be pursuing the much anticipated fight against Anthony Joshua. However, it was ruled that Fury had to honour the third fight with Wilder before he could face Joshua and so the pair came to fight each other a third time on 9th October 2021 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

During the third and final fight between Fury and Wilder, both men exchanged a total of five knockdowns, with Fury winning the match with an eleventh-round knockout. When the fight was stopped Fury had been winning the bout on all three scorecards and had landed 39% of his punches compared to Wilder’s 20%. The 150 punches landed by Fury is the most ever landed on an opponent and it was calculated by CompuBox that Tsyon Fury had outboxed Wilder in every single round of the fight. The boxing match was widely acclaimed, with the Ring magazine describing it as “a rare and historic heavyweight championship trilogy.”

Tyson Fury’s next opponent will be against fellow Brit, Dilian Whyte at Wembley Stadium on 24th April. Fury will be defending his WBC heavyweight title and fighting on home soil for the first time in four years. It is going to be an incredible fight between two of the biggest characters in the sport.
